James Cameron on the set of AvatarAvatar director James Cameron is the latest Hollywood director to join the attempt to stop the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Last week it emerged that Kevin Costner had become involved in the environmental disaster and had offered a device he had invented while working on his movie flop, Waterworld.

Now the acclaimed Canadian director of Titanic and The Abyss has joined the fight according to People. Cameron, who is an ocean technology expert, recently attended a meeting with underwater innovator Phil Nuytten in Washington. The pair first met when Nuytten's company, Nuytco Research, built the submersibles used in Mr. Cameron's 1989 underwater thriller, The Abyss. Now the acclaimed Canadian director of Titanic and The Abyss has joined the fight according to People. Cameron, who is an ocean technology expert, recently attended a meeting with underwater innovator Phil Nuytten in Washington. The pair first met when Nuytten's company, Nuytco Research, built the submersibles used in Mr. Cameron's 1989 underwater thriller, The Abyss.

The results of the meeting were not clear, but US officials are said to be considering all options, including the use of manned submersibles, to help cap the well.

As well as Cameron and Costner, other celebrities who have become involved in the the fight to tame the spill include former Dallas star, Victoria Principal, who donated $200,000 to the clear up operation, while actor Stephen Baldwin is behind a $1.5 million documentary project entitled The Will To Drill aiming to raise awareness of the situation.

"I want to talk to the world with this film," explained Baldwin. "I want to create the story of the impact that then crescendos into motivating people to be pro-active in their own choices."
