The fairytales of the Brothers Grimm are delightfully morbid, so it's always wonderful to see a contemporary homage that retains the gruesomeness of the tale. Take for example the tale of "Hansel & Gretel," wherein two young children are held captive by a witch in a gingerbread house. Turning on the oven with the intention of cooking the children, she ends up the main course herself, burning to death while our titular children enjoy the sweets of the house. This is taken to a terrifying extreme with the short animation Who's Hungry? by animator David Ochs.

The website Cartoon Brew offers some background on the young animator and his disturbing animation. As a 23-year old freshman at the California Institute of the Arts, he was inspired by the tale of "Hansel & Gretel" to create his own interpretation. Sadly, as a freshman, he was only allowed to create a piece no longer than ninety seconds. To have a longer piece screened at the Producers' show would require the film to be selected by the student body as the best film. Let's just say he succeeded.

The film is incredibly dark and morbid and definitely worth a look. Check it out.
