For the record, producer/director McG's latest project, 'The DUFF,' has absolutely nothing to do with Hilary Duff. Which we're sure she's happy about, as the acronym stands for "Designated Ugly Fat Friend."

'The DUFF' is the title of a young-adult novel by 20-year-old Kody Keplinger, and even though it won't be out until September 7, Variety reports that McG ('Charlie's Angels' and 'Terminator Salvation') has optioned the rights to the film.

The book is about "cynical seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper" who finds herself falling for "the guy she thought she hated more than anyone ... man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush," even though he's nicknamed her "Duffy," as in the dreaded acronym of the book's title.

Author Keplinger's inspiration to write her first novel: "I always felt like the 'ugly girl' in high school, so when I was introduced to the word during my senior year, I knew I was the Duff. The idea of writing a book with 'DUFF' as the title started as a joke, but when I realized that my friends felt like Duffs, too, I knew I had to write this story."
