Mike Leigh at the Cannes Film Festival 2010Last night was a reception for the London Film School hosted by its chairman Mike Leigh, in the pretty walled garden of the villa where the UK's Film 4 are staying. It was a pleasantly low-key affair with no major celebrity attendance, but I'm reporting it because I was able to clear up one of the big talking points of this year's Cannes.

At the press conference for Leigh's Another Year on Saturday, the first question asked was by Sunday Times columnist Richard Brooks. Leigh's reply - "I refuse to answer a question from you and you know why" - has caused much speculation here as to the reason.

After a conversation with a credible source, it seems the director fell out with Brooks over misquotes at a round table interview in Cannes 1996 for Leigh's Palme D'Or winning Secrets & Lies. Leigh was able to access a tape of the interview from other journalists at the round table and presented the transcript, alongside the published interview, to the Guardian, where it had appeared (although apparently it was originally set for the Guardian's sister paper the Observer). A meeting with Leigh, Brooks and the Guardian editor followed.

This may sound like Leigh has been bearing a petty grudge for a long time, but apparently it didn't end there, with what are perceived to be digs at Leigh in Brooks' writing over the years. Mystery solved. Time to go see some more movies...
