GidgetHey guys, remember Gidget? Once upon a time, the perky, lovable surfer girl was a ubiquitous brand and household name thanks to films and television shows starring the likes of Sandra Dee and Sally Field. Well, don't look now, but it appears those days are back, as Gidget is on her way back to the big screen.

According to Variety, in fact, Gidget is in the midst of a full-blown revival: In addition to a film deal, Pterodactyl Productions is planning to launch a new Gidget television series to go along with what Variety terms a "global revival" of the brand that spans "apparel, accessories, sportswear, surfboards, bikes, skateboards and a Gidget Surf School." The multi-media aspects of this new wave of Gidget-mania are still in the early planning stages, but what we do know so far is that Pterodactyl -- which shouldn't be confused with the legendary Sci-Fi Channel / Coolio collaboration of the same name -- was formed by 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' producer Barney Cohen, who will be teaming with '300' producer Mark Canton to develop new Gidget opportunities.

This isn't the first time a return of Gidgetmania has threatened to sweep the nation: in 1987, 'The New Gidget' had a short, nostalgia-fueled run. This time around, however, the series will be tweaked for more modern audiences; Variety reports that the newest Gidget "will tackle contemporary issues and will be aimed at teens, tweens and pre-tweens."

Currently, of course, that market is dominated by the dewey ingenues being churned out by the Disney star machine. Which, come to think of it, sounds like a perfect fit. Could the next Miley Cyrus become a star playing Gidget on the big screen? Personally, we think Sally Field still looks like she could wrangle the part, but if not, we'd love to see what a Disney/Pterodactyl team-up could bring us.

In the meantime, here's a flashback to the original 'Gidget' film, courtesy of Dick Clark himself:
