The actor stated he felt as though sending the misunderstood war hero on another adventure might be "misinterpreted as a mercenary gesture and not necessary." Pretty smart on Stallone's part, plus there's no denying that Rambo really ends in a way that brings closure to the series and the character.
When the guy who made the character an icon says he's "99% sure" the character is done, that generally means it's over. Yet, we've been hearing reports from Cannes that Nu Image/Millennium Films are promoting Rambo V with a poster stamped with "Coming 2011" at the festival's film marketplace. Granted, that poster looks like a poorly Photoshopped Rambo one-sheet, but still ... what gives?
Stallone spoke with AICN's Harry Knowles the other day and assured everyone that his stance hasn't changed. According to Knowles, Stallone says there's no way he's doing Rambo 5. He will recut Rambo for a special edition DVD and Blu-ray release, but then he's done with the character. The actor went on to discuss Knowles' theory that this was a ploy on Millennium/Nu Image's part to raise money to woo him back -- something he says they're welcome to try but isn't going to happen.
As the conversation progressed, Stallone tells Knowles that the people behind the posters have basically told him if he doesn't return someone else will take over the role. Knowles states that Stallone is unfazed by this. Yikes.
It's all but impossible to imagine anyone other than Sly playing John Rambo. However, the idea of a prequel dealing with his time in Vietnam, featuring a new, young actor does seem to have some potential. I'd rather they leave this series alone -- Rambo has a great ending -- but Hollywood rarely works that way. What do you think? Would you see a movie with a young Rambo or should Rambo serve as the epitaph for this iconic action series? Hit the comment section to share your opinion.
