Deadline reports that the comic book character Judge Dredd will be returning to the big screen and will serve as judge, jury and executioner in 3-D.

'Judge Dredd' was a popular UK comic series in the '80s, set in a violent, dystopian future where justice is applied in fast-forward. Producer Andrew Macdonald and director Pete Travis ('Vantage Point') are looking to bring the character back to its edgy roots and possibly jump-start a new sci-fi franchise.

Travis will be working from a screenplay by Alex Garland, who's best known for his several collaborations with director Danny Boyle, including 'The Beach' (which was adapted from his own novel), '28 Days Later' and 'Sunshine.' Garland also wrote the script for the scrapped 'Halo' movie.

The character previously wreaked havoc in the 1995 action film starring Sylvester Stallone in the title role (pictured). 'Judge Dredd' flopped at the box office, earning less than $35 million, domestically, on a budget of $90 million.
