More Nightly News after the jump Deadline Hollywood is reporting that there may be a match-up between action icons Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel for the next installment of 'The Fast and the Furious' franchise. This should be a welcome relief for The Rock fans, who have watched their hero take part in such silly films as 'The Game Plan' and 'Tooth Fairy.' He's currently charging hard in CBS Films' revenge drama 'Faster' and, in 'Fast & Furious 5,' he may play a lawman tracking down Dom (Diesel) and Brian (Paul Walker). Justin Lin is returning to direct.
'Rise of the Apes': Fox has announced a June 24, 2011, release date for the 'Planet of the Apes' prequel, which is set in San Francisco and revolves around "experiments with genetic engineering (that) lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy." According to The Hollywood Reporter, the production will use CGI apes instead of costumed actors.
Just one day after announcing that Hugo Weaving will play Johann Schmidt, a.k.a. the Red Skull, in 'Captain America: The First Avenger,' Marvel has added a second bad guy to the cast: Toby Jones, who will play Arnim Zola. According to Cinema Blend, Zola is a "genetic engineer who, like Red Skull, worked for the Nazis during World War II creating various evil creatures for Hitler." Jones is the type of character actor whose name you don't know but whose face is recognizable -- especially as an evil henchman. 'Captain America' opens July 22, 2011.
More 'Super 8': Heat Vision has gone one step further in the mad rush to report on 'Super 8,' the Steven Spielberg/J.J. Abrams collaboration that will come down the pike in summer 2011 -- they've seen a teaser trailer that will be attached to screenings of 'Iron Man 2' this weekend. According to Heat Vision, the story is based on "the possibility that a group of kids in 1979 are playing around making movies with their Super 8 cameras (as Abrams and Spielberg did as kids) and accidentally capture something ... sinister, on film."
Quick bits: Michael Imperioli has been cast as the lead in writer-director Richard Ledes' horror-thriller 'Foreclosure,' which takes place in a nearly empty, economically depressed, bank-owned neighborhood block devoid of humans but where "ghosts don't move out [THR] ... Organizers of the Venice Film Festival have tapped Quentin Tarantino to be president of the international jury at the fest's 67th edition, which runs Sept. 1-10 [BBC] ... Chris Pine has been offered the starring role in Fox's buddy comedy 'This Means War.' He'd play opposite Reese Witherspoon in the McG-helmed film (Bradley Cooper dropped out in February) [Hollywood Insider].
