What movie role is so hot, it's got Oscar nominated-actresses Carey Mulligan, Ellen Page, Natalie Portman and Keira Knightley all in heated competition?

That would be the 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,' the best-selling first book in the Millennium series by Swedish author Stieg Larsson. (A Swedish film version, already in theaters, has had only a limited release.)

Deadline.com's Nikki Finke reports that Mulligan, an Oscar nominee for 'An Education,' took screenwriter Steve Zallian out to lunch, while Page (nommed for 'Juno') wrote a "heartfelt note" to producer Scott Rudin. David Fincher will direct, although there are no reports of anyone wining and dining the 'Se7en' helmer. Also "circling" the part: Kristen Stewart (who co-starred in Fincher's 'Panic Room,' in 2002, long before 'Twilight' made her into a superstar), 'Alice in Wonderland's Mia Wasikowska and Olivia Thirlby ('The Wackness,' 'Juno.')

But none of them may land the part: Fincher "is not sure if he wants to go with an actress of any note or go with an unknown," an insider tells Finke. "David's process is very specific and private. He's looking for authenticity and a degree of fierceness and believability capable of delivering the intensity that the part on the page calls for." Sony executives reportedly consider the film such a hot property, it doesn't need a known name.

At least not for the female role. According to Finke, Brad Pitt has been offered the lead role of a journalist investigating the girl's death. Pitt previously teamed with Fincher on 'Se7en,' 'Fight Club' and 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.'
