Hunter S. ThompsonFor decades, Hunter S. Thompson has been one of Hollywood's darlings. With high profile friends such as Jack Nicholson and Johnny Depp and high profile films such as 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' and 'Where the Buffalo Roam,' the father of gonzo journalism continues to inspire filmmakers more than a half decade after his death. Case in point: 'Prisoner of Denver,' one of Thompson's final projects, is reportedly on its way to a theater near you.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, 'Prisoner of Denver,' which Thompson co-wrote with Vanity Fair editor Mark Seal, has been optioned by Motion Picture Corporation of America. Published in the June, 2004 issue of Vanity Fair, 'Prisoner of Denver' examined the case of 21-year-old Lisl Auman, who was charged and convicted for murder despite the fact that she was in police custody, locked in the back of a cruiser, at the time of the crime. Published in the June 2004 issue of Vanity Fair, 'Prisoner of Denver' examined the case of 21-year-old Lisl Auman, who was charged and convicted for murder despite the fact that she was in police custody, locked in the back of a cruiser, at the time of the crime.

Thompson, who was living in Colorado at the time, became aware of the incident when Auman wrote to him from jail and turned the case into a cause célèbre, rallying Hollywood stars such as Depp, Woody Harrelson and Benicio Del Toro to campaign for Auman's release. The Colorado Supreme Court overturned the conviction in 2005 on a technicality, just one month after Thompson committed suicide at the age of 67.

For Seal, the experience was the highlight of his career and the capstone to Thompson's life.

"My first day I was in a female correctional institution, saying a line I had been waiting my entire life to say: 'Hunter Thompson sent me,'" Seal said. "He made being a reporter glamorous and exciting in the 1970s. It was one of the best experiences in my whole journalistic career, and it was one of the best causes of his life."

No word yet on whether any of Thompson's more high profile pals will sign on for 'Prisoner of Denver.' Depp, though, is always a candidate: The actor, who played Thompson in 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,' will star in an adaptation of Thompson's novel 'The Rum Diary,' which is tentatively scheduled to hit theaters later this year.
