Best of the New Releases: The Descent: Part 2

Neil Marshall's creepy cave flick The Descent was an awesome piece of atmospheric, almost claustrophobic horror. Despite the protestations of Peter Hall, it's a very solid film, starring a group of strong women who make a couple of bad decisions and pay for them dearly. US horror fans have been awaiting the follow up, aptly named The Descent: Part 2 for a great many moons. The film hit the UK but was sadly passed over for US theatrical release. But all that changes this week as it finally hits DVD on this side of the pond.

Also new today is Dark Nature, a Troma release that the product description compares to The Shining and Long Weekend. A strange pair of comparisons, perhaps, but certainly an interesting one if nothing else. I love Long Weekend and obviously The Shining as well, and the cover art looks pretty serious compared to most other Troma releases that pop up on Netflix Watch Instantly.

Not to be outdone, The Aslyum is back this week with Megapiranha, which we mentioned last week since it stars 80s pop sensation Tiffany who also starred in Necrosis. It's from The Asylum and it's called Mega Piranha. That should tell you everything you need to know. If you got absolutely giddy at the trailer for Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus, then this should be right up your alley.
Best of the Catalog Releases:
Tales from the Darkside: Season 3

An anthology TV series from the 80s, Tales from the Darkside was created by famed horror director George Romero. Started more or less as a result of the success of his anthology film Creepshow, Tales from the Darkside was a 30 minute show that ended up with 4 seasons and was followed by a full on feature film version. Seasons 1 and 2 are already available on DVD, as is the film, and now Season 3 joins the ranks. I'm afraid it aired while I was pretty young so I've missed out on this one, but I loved Creepshow and I'm definitely interested in checking this one out on DVD.

Complete list of Horror on DVD and Blu-ray for the week of April 27th:

The Descent: Part 2 - DVD
Dark Nature - DVD and Blu-ray
Megapiranha - DVD
Tales from the Darkside - DVD
Life Blood - DVD (oh my ... and starring Scout Taylor-Compton from Rob Zombie's absolutely wretched Halloween films.)
Transylmania - DVD (an attempt at horror-comedy which looks like a Friedberg and Seltzer fiasco)
Without Trace - DVD (Italian, looks like a sweet little giallo)

Of interest (these films aren't exactly horror but might be noteworthy to horror fans for one reason or another):

D13-U: District 13: Ultimatum - DVD and Blu-ray - the sequel to District 13, the French flick that introduced American audiences to the "parkour" craze finally hits home video this week. Yet another film that fans got to see at Fantastic Fest, D13-U picks up where D13 left off, offering more insane free running stunts and action scenes. While it's probably not quite as awesome as the original, this is still worth checking out.

We'll be back next week with a look at the releases for May 4th!
