When Platinum Dunes' Friday the 13th reboot opened in February of last year, it blew out of the gate and crushed the box office competition. Naturally, plans for a sequel were announced almost immediately. If there's one thing Hollywood loves, it's making money -- and an F13 sequel felt like a sure thing. They were even talking about an August 13th, 2010 release date.
It seems the dream of a second Jason outing is deader than a camp counselor at Crystal Lake who just smoked a bowl, had sex, and and chugged a beer -- and that's pretty dead. Producer Brad Fuller broke the news on his Twitter feed. When a user asked him what was up with the new film, Fuller's response was as follows "it is dead- not happening."
Bloody-Disgusting got Fuller to elaborate a bit, and he told the site "Right now there is no movement on Friday 13th: Part 2." That isn't quite the same thing as dead, but it definitely would seem to put a nail into the coffin when it comes to seeing a sequel this year. The follow-up was slated for a 3D release and would have seen Derek Mears once again don the hockey mask.
While the decision is certainly puzzling, this is Hollywood -- where projects stay dead about as well as the villains in your standard slasher flick. If the Nightmare on Elm Street remake opens big, I wouldn't be shocked to see Friday the 13th Part 2 come back to life. We'll keep you posted as details emerge.
