CATEGORIES Action, Casting, New Releases, Quentin Tarantino, Trailers and Clips, Trailers and Clips, Movie News, New Releases, CinematicalWhile Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's Grindhouse didn't exactly set the world aflame with its box office earnings, the title's fake trailers have done quite well. Machete is due out later this year, Eli Roth is still talking about doing Thanksgiving, and now comes news that Hobo With a Shotgun is set to begin filming tomorrow. Maybe one of these days we'll get to see Rob Zombie's Werewolf Women of the SS.
Ain't It Cool News brings us official word on the project, which is set to be directed by Jason Eisner. In the original clip, the title character was played by Jim Brunt. For the feature version, Brunt has been replaced by none other than Rutger Hauer. I love this casting choice -- watching Brunt is fun, but re-imagining it with Roy Batty running around as a homeless vigilante blowing away crooked cops, pedophile Santas, and other scumbags with his trusty pump-action shotgun is kind of drool-worthy.
If you caught Grindhouse and can't recall the Hobo With a Shotgun trailer, it's not because you're getting forgetful. Eisner's clip was the winner of South by Southwest's Grindhouse trailer contest and was featured primarily in prints screened in Canada. Eisner's other short, the over-the-top Christmas-trees-take-revenge film Treevenge was a Sundance hit. Anyone who has seen it, knows this guy has potential.
So what do you think? Are you tired of exploitation chic? I've grown weary of seeing mainstream films with decent budgets ape the style of cheap B-movies from the '70s, but I think there's always room for a good throwback to the days of the grindhouse if it's done right. Hit the jump for the Hobo With a Shotgun trailer, which is definitely NSFW.
