There's not a logical reason why Event Horizon should work as well as it does. It's a unashamed, unpretentious mash-up of Aliens, Hellraiser, The Black Hole, and The Shining -- a patchwork quilt of obvious influences, cobbled together by a man that some consider one of the very worst modern directors (Paul W.S. Anderson.)

...and yet...

It simply works. It's scary and it's got style to spare. I have a feeling that time will be kind to Paul W.S. Anderson's overall body of work, and that Event Horizon will continue to be one of his highest regarded films. He's no great shakes as a writer, but as a director, he has a great compositional eye and an old-fashioned Roger Corman way of squeezing as much from a budget as he possibly can. Maybe genre fans would be a little kinder to Anderson if he wasn't constantly letting them down by taking on high-profile projects and turning them into dopey modern day B-movies (Alien Vs. Predator, Resident Evil, etc.) If Event Horizon is any indication, Anderson should move away from the remakes and video game properties and get his hands dirty with another original concept. Not that I'm calling Event Horizon an "original" concept...
