The Heat Vision blog is currently reporting that Sharlto Copley, the South African actor who played Wikus Van De Merwe in District 9, is in negotiations to take on a leading role in I Am Number Four. If all the contracts go as expected, he'll be playing the guardian figure of Alex Pettyfer's character, both of whom are aliens disguised as humans living on Earth after escaping the annihilation of their home world. The film, adapted by Smallville honchos Al Gough and Miles Millar from an unpublished manuscript written by James Frey and Jobie Hughes, is still set to be directed by Eagle Eye helmer D.J. Caruso and produced by Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay for Dreamworks.

Though I've been curious about this project since it was first announced months ago, the casting of Copley is the first bit of news that has me legitimately excited for it. I think Copley came out of nowhere to blow everyone away in District 9 and I still remember his comments during a Q&A for the film. He essentially said that after D9 he would be extremely picky about the roles he took on next, so his interest in I Am Number Four is the vote of confidence I think the film needed.
