CATEGORIES Action, Comedy, Box Office, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Box Office Predictions, UK Box Office, Cinematical, UK Box OfficeIt was close, but despite early estimates Clash of the Titans held on to the top spot with the comedy Date Night taking a very close second. Here's the top five:
1. Clash of the Titans: $26.6 million
2. Date Night: $25.2 million
3. How to Train Your Dragon: $24.8 million
4. Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too?: $11 million
5. The Last Song: $9.8 million
Two new releases this week:
Death at a Funeral
What's It All About: Comedy in which a dysfunctional family gathers to bury their father amid bickering, blackmail and a misplaced corpse.
Why It Might Do Well: This is a remake of a Frank Oz film from 2007. The original had some good ideas but was painfully dry. This new cast, which includes Chris Rock, Danny Glover and Tracy Morgan, may have the missing spark.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Still, the original is only a few years old. It may be too early to revisit the story.
Number of Theaters: 2,400
Prediction: $18 million
What's It All About: A young comic book fan decides to put on a costume and fight crime, thus inspiring a whole sub-culture of masked crimefighters.
Why It Might Do Well: Comic book movies are still hot and the many trailers have lived up to the title.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Speaking of all those trailers, I'm hoping we haven't already seen all the good parts.
Number of Theaters: 3,000
Prediction: $34 million
