Deadline reports that the 'Family Guy' maestro will be making his live-action directorial debut with the dark comedy, 'Ted.' The $65 million budgeted film will mix live-action and CGI as it tells the strange story of a man and his teddy bear.

'Ted' will have a hard-R rating, which apparently made MacFarlane's regular studio Fox reluctant to take on the project. The film is now set up at Universal, with MacFarlane set to voice the teddy bear character. Seth MacFarlaneSeth MacFarlane is better off 'Ted.'

Universal taking on 'Ted' is certainly in line with the studio's new focus on comedies rather than "serious" pics that have been struggling at the box office, such as 'Green Zone' and 'Public Enemies.' Last week, Universal announced it would be developing a sequel to the Rowan Atkinson spy comedy, 'Johnny English.'

Besides the popular 'Family Guy,' Seth MacFarlane is also the mastermind behind the animated Fox shows 'American Dad' and 'The Cleveland Show.'
