The radio and TV personality has just seen the first issue of his new series Turf (published by Image Comics) debut, and sales have been so brisk that a second printing has already been commissioned. More interesting is a bombshell mentioned in the piece about what we can expect from the title moving forward. "There will be five further issues, a hardback collection and – if all goes to plan – a Turf movie made by Matthew Vaughn." Vaughn has been linked to seemingly every superhero film in the universe, a trend that should continue thanks to his directorial work on Kick-Ass -- a film written by Ross' wife, Jane Goldman. Given that link, it certainly seems plausible that Vaughn could wind up making this film.
According to Comic Book Resources, "Turf begins in Prohibition-era New York as a vengeful gang war erupts between booze-smuggling mobsters and the blood thirsty Dragonmir Family. As an ancient prophecy unfolds amidst the maelstrom of violence, the entire city is up for grabs and it's anyone's guess who will come out on top. The only glimmer of hope is an unlikely alliance between tough guy Eddie Falco and a stranger from another world." I've not read the first issue yet, but this makes me wanna run down to my local comic shop and grab a copy ASAP. Gangsters, aliens, and vampires sounds like a winning combination to me.
News of a potential Turf movie, while certainly interesting, also feels at least somewhat premature. With only one issue in the can, anything could happen and lots of new comics come out of the gate with brisk sales only to vanish entirely within their first year. Here's to hoping Turf can buck that trend -- do you agree?
