Best of the New Releases: Tony
Tony, the debut feature film from writer/director Gerard Johnson, made the festival rounds starting in Edinburgh and Slamdance before screening here in Austin as part of the 2010 SXSW film festival. This small British character study has certainly raised some eyebrows, including those that adorn our own Alison Nastasi, who seemed to like the film when she reviewed it back in March. Clocking in at a startlingly brief 76 minutes, Tony seems to be worth a look.
Also in the new release category this week is High Plains Invaders, the new entry in the Maneater series. This old west throwback film focuses on a small group taking refuge to try to survive an infestation. An infestation of what, you may well ask? According to the Amazon description the small town is overrun by "uranium based insectoid creatures." No, dear reader, I'm not kidding. That should be all you need to know to decide whether or not High Plains Invaders is your particular cup of tea. Me? Oh, you know I'm in. They had me at "uranium."
Best of the Catalog Releases: The Relic on Blu-ray
I have to admit ... I haven't seen The Relic in over a decade. The film stars Tom Sizemore and Penelope Ann Miller and centers on some mysterious crates that a researcher has sent to the Natural History Museum in Chicago. A series of gruesome killings leads the police to investigate. Directed by Peter Hyams, whose body of work includes films like Outland, 2010 and Timecop, The Relic is a pretty cool flick. I saw it when it first came out on home video, which at the time was still called VHS. I wish I remembered more of it, but what I can recall is a solid, creepy atmosphere and some decent scares making for a solid creature feature. I even read the book the film is based on, which, as usual, was better than the movie. Don't let that scare you off, though. This is a movie I'm really looking forward to revisiting, and in high definition no less!
Complete List of Horror Movies on DVD and Blu-ray for the week of April 6th:
- The Relic - Blu-ray
- High Plains Invaders
- Blood Ties - The Complete Series - Blu-ray and DVD
Of interest (these films aren't exactly horror but might be noteworthy to horror fans for one reason or another):
Taxidermia - Another Fantastic Fest alumnus, this one from their third year back in 2007. Taxidermia is, quite frankly, completely insane. I'm afraid I saw it at the end of a long day of movie watching and I'm a bit hazy on the middle section, but I remember the end vividly and it was certainly interesting if nothing else. Worth tracking down for those into extreme cinema.
Dreamscape (blu-ray) -- This sci-fi thriller stars Dennis Quaid, Christopher Plummer, Kate Capshaw and the man himself Max von Sydow. I haven't seen it myself but the synopsis describing a new technology for entering people's brains sure gets me excited about checking it out. Say what you will about the film, but that cover art is pretty awesome!
It also appears that a company called Well Go USA has rather quietly released 3 Shaw Brothers films on Blu-ray today, under a line they're calling Sword Masters. The titles that dropped today are:
We'll back next week with a look at the titles dropping on April 13th!
