On Monday evening, Ain't It Cool News' longtime film critic and entertainment writer Mr. Beaks hosted a q&a at Los Angeles' storied New Beverly Cinema for The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. Although neither writer Earl Mac Rauch nor director W. D. Richter were in attendance, star Peter Weller and two members of Buckaroo Banzai's band, Billy Vera and Gerald Peterson, participated in a lively discussion about the film, fielded questions from the capacity crowd, and ruminated on the meaning (then and now) of this cult classic.

By comparison, the previous evening's q&a with cast members from Repo Man, including Harry Dean Stanton and Del Zamora, was underwhelming despite Stanton's reliable cantankerousness: Stanton seemed to have trouble hearing his fellow cast members, and eventually said that the session was going on forever. But as the last few seats got filled in, Mr. Beaks managed tenuously to contain his obvious excitement as he stood at the front of the auditorium and introduced Weller, Vera and Peterson.

Perhaps surprisingly, Weller required little prodding to delve into the film: he and Vera both insisted that anyone who claimed to understand the movie while they were making it was lying, and the would-be star of Robocop waxed poetic – hilariously so - about the intelligence and talent of Rauch and Richter, the latter of whom made his directing debut with the film. Additionally, Weller discussed many of the other cast members, including Jeff Goldblum, who he said he met on the day Goldblum lost his virginity, and Christopher Lloyd, who Weller claims Christopher Walken described as "the weirdest guy on the planet."

Less out of professional obligation than personal enjoyment, Cinematical attended the screening and recorded the q&a. Rather than recap the highlights or assemble quotes, however, we've uploaded the audio below for your listening pleasure. Please bear in mind that because of the sellout attendance, we weren't able to sit front and center, but check out the comments, observations and insights Weller and company offered for Buckaroo Banzai. This was an amazing q&a and a once-in-a-lifetime sort of experience, so check it out!
