It's almost April 2010, and if four months can fly by in the blink of an eye, I figure, why not watch a free movie like Pieces of April, which is not only appropriate by name, but a flick that will, let's face it, be relevant again in the blink of an eye? Before we know it ... eh, let's not go there and just get straight to the movie.

A pre-Tom Cruise Katie Holmes stars as April, the tattooed, hair-dyed good-girl-gone-bad who has set off on her own, living in a tiny apartment in New York City's Lower East Side. She's invited her apprehensive family over for Thanksgiving dinner, but is faced with a dead oven, a raw turkey, and the fear of being the family disappointment once again. To add the day's challenges, mom (Patricia Clarkson), is dying of breast cancer, which becomes not a source of tears, but rather one of sarcasm and laughs in Clarkson's talented hands.

We've been existing in a Holmes limbo lately, but 2010 looks to be her return to the cinematic public eye with The Romantics, The Extra Man, and Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. But in the interim...
