The events leading up to the October showdown between Paranormal Activity 2 and Saw VII has probably been more entertaining than either film will be. There's been drama, directorial shenanigans, and all sorts of intrigue surrounding both films, but things may be settling down now that Paranormal Activity 2 finally has a helmer.

Forget those rumors about guys like Brian De Palma, Akiva Goldsman, or Brad Anderson directing the film--news emerged earlier on the official Paranormal Activity website (direct from Oren Peli himself) stating the search for a director is over. The big winner? Kip Williams. If you're all like me, your initial reaction was "who?" as you furiously clicked over to IMDB...

Williams is best known for directing 2004's The Door in the Floor, an adaptation of a John Irving novel starring Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger. The filmmaker has no horror experience, but that doesn't seem to matter to Paramount.

Producer Oren Peli had this to say about the hiring. "We are thrilled to have Kip working with us. He is the guy we want at the helm, because he knows exactly what we want to deliver to the fans...and I can't wait to be a part of what he's putting together."

I'll be honest, this news isn't exactly inspiring confidence in me. It's better than Goldsman, but Williams doesn't have the name draw of a De Palma or the genre cred of Anderson. Can Williams recapture the magic of the first film? I guess we'll have to wait til October to find out.
