Tom Cruise and co-producer J.J. Abrams, who directed the third installment in 2006, have been meeting with several possible directors, including 'Zombieland' helmer Ruben Fleischer and 'Shaun of the Dead' maestro Edgar Wright (who proved he knows a thing or two about action sequences with 'Hot Fuzz').

'Mission: Impossible IV' has been on the fast track since Cruise announced it as his next starring vehicle, with Paramount setting a release date of May 27, 2011.

Brad Bird, who won Oscars for Pixar's 'Incredibles' and 'Ratatouille,' has been looking to make his live-action directorial debut for some time, with his long in-development chronicle of the San Francisco earthquake, '1906,' currently stalled for budgetary reasons. His other animated credits include 'The Iron Giant' and 'Ratatouille.'
