Oscar-nominated actress Angela Bassett ('What Love Got to Do With It') has gone from saving people in the E.R. to saving the universe.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Bassett will be joining the stacked cast of Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard and Tim Robbins in the big screen adaptation 'The Green Lantern'.

Bassett will play Dr. Amanda Waller, who in the original comic goes on to head up a government-run group of indentured supervillains called the Suicide Squad. It remains unclear whether Waller's inclusion in the film is a set up for sequels, a nod to comics lore or simply a red herring (like Dylan Baker's Dr. Curt Conners in the 'Spider-Man' films, who never became the reptilian villain he did in the comics). The news tops off what's been an eclectic few years for Bassett, who joined the cast of 'ER' for its final season in 2009, played Biggie Smalls' mother, Voletta Wallace, in the last year's biopic 'Notorious,' and is set to direct an adaptation of the Percival Everett novel 'Erasure.'

'The Green Lantern,' directed by Martin Campbell, recently began filming in New Orleans and is aiming for a June 2011 release.
