Wes Craven's
on again, off again flirtation with directing duties on Dimension's Scream 4 has finally reached its inevitable conclusion. As reported but not confirmed countless times, Craven is indeed directing a fourth entry in the Scream franchise he created with screenwriter Kevin Williamson (who is also on board for the new film) all the way back in 1996. Yes, Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courtney Cox-Arquette will be returning as Sidney Prescott, Dewey Riley and Gale Weathers respectively. Shooting begins this spring with a target release date of April 15th, 2011.

Those are about all the facts we have at this point and none of them are surprising considering Scream 4 has long been a poorly kept secret. And though I am genuinely looking forward to what Williamson, who is at his personal best when having fun with Ghostface and genre conventions, has in store for a 21st century Scream, one of the more interesting tidbits to come out of this confirmation is this wording from Variety: "Dimension said its 2011 slate focuses on continuing its most successful franchises."
