Jerry Bruckheimer was at ShoWest in Las Vegas over the weekend, and he's dished the dirt on casting for the newest Pirates of the Caribbean film -- On Stranger Tides. MTV exclusively learned that Penélope Cruz will be playing the swashbuckling sweetheart to Johnny Depp's character, Jack Sparrow. She also happens to be the daughter of Depp's nemesis, Blackbeard -- played by Ian McShane (probably the only reason I would want to see a 4th Pirates film).
Bruckheimer told MTV that audiences can expect a lot of humor from Cruz's character and called her "feisty" -- confirming that she will be playing a Spanish character which is perfect considering she's ... Spanish. Cruz was previously described as "Sparrow's foil and equal in many ways," so here's hoping they actually give her something more to do other than looking blank. One thing we can be certain of is that Cruz possesses all natural breasts. After Disney's recent mandate (there will actually be a "show and tell" too) that actresses with an "enhanced" bosom need not apply, it appears clear that Penélope's treasure chest is 100% real. The other big question surrounding the casting of On Stranger Tides revolved around the potential return of Geoffrey Rush's Barbossa. The actor has stated he would be back since late last year, and Bruckheimer has now confirmed that as well. Apparently, Rush passed his jiggle test. [bounce past the jump for more ... ]
Filming on the fourth installment in the wildly popular series is set to begin this June. The story will pick up where At World's End concluded, with Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow still searching for the Fountain of Youth. Bruckheimer assures us "we're going to take a whole new direction," despite the narrative continuity with the last film. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it all pans out.
