The casting news has moved at a breakneck pace in recent weeks regarding 'Captain America: First Avenger,' Marvel's latest big screen comic book adaptation. First, we heard that John Krasinski was "very likely" to play the role. Then, just as Hugo Weaving began talks to play the villain, Red Skull, we heard that poor Jim Halpert was out.

Now, according to the Hollywood Reporter, Channing Tatum ('G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra') has been added to the list of possible actors who may play Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America. Others being considered for the role are Ryan Phillippe, Garrett Hedlund ('Tron Legacy'), Wilson Blethel, Mike Vogel and Chris Evans.

When asked about the rumors last April, Channing told Inside Movies, "I would play Captain America. But I think there's someone else up for it, and I think that actor is a jillion times bigger and probably better for it. I've heard that Will Smith was toying around with it. But I would love to play Captain America, I dig his story." The search is also on for who will play Cap's patriotically-named love interest, Betsy Ross. Though Keira Knightley has reportedly been approached for the role, the studio has not settled on anyone yet.

As for the shuffle around who should play Steve Rogers, its hard for us to take sides. It's no secret that the development of 'The First Avenger' is part of a series of moves that Marvel has been making since 2008's 'Iron Man.' Robert Downey Jr. has already made one appearance as Tony Stark in Edward Norton's 'Hulk' reboot, and more cameos are in store for 'Iron Man 2' and the upcoming 'Thor' adaptation, starring Chris Hemsworth (both involving Samuel L. Jackson as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Nick Fury).

With all those big personalities, what kind of actor would be the right fit for the medically-enhanced First Avenger? In a recent interview, an anonymous Marvel insider told the Latino Review (spoiler-filled link) that 'Cap "needs to be played by a strong actor. He's got to have incredibly strong character because not only does he become an Adonis from the Super-Soldier serum, but he develops into an amazing fighter. He also has to be a guy who can establish order in complete chaos."

Given what we've seen of the actors being considered, Tatum -- who has already played a solder in 'G.I. Joe,' 'Stop-Loss' and 'Dear John' -- seems to be the most natural of the bunch. But then again, many comic book adaptations benefit from risky, unexpected casting choices (see: Toby Maguire, Michael Keaton),
so maybe the best man to take up the shield is someone, like Steve Rogers himself, who seems the least likely?
