Well, leave it to the investigative reporters at E! to uncover Cameron's true feelings on being the butt of jokes. Here's what the director, who claimed to know nothing of the Baron Cohen incident, said at a party last night:
"If they want to poke fun at Avatar Sunday, that's OK by me. The Oscars are a celebration of movies...even the gaffes and out of bounds stuff are all part of the fun."
I'm sure most Oscars viewers would be surprised if the ceremony avoided some kind of jab at the blockbuster Best Picture nominee. Though an SNL-level Jerry Springer-esque Avatar spoof would be lame, certainly the ceremony would be incomplete without somebody donning blue face for the telecast. I'm guessing Steve Martin would jump at the chance, in fact. Still, in spite of Cameron's okay, do we really need another Avatar parody at all? Everyone from SNL to the Jersey Shore cast has done one and now we're at the point where no Oscar presenter -- not even Baron Cohen -- could really do anything fresh and funny enough to bother.
What do you think? Should the Oscars go on without an Avatar spoof or do you agree with Cameron that it'd be fun?
