The original blue-skinned pop phenomenon is coming to the big screen, and it has a secret weapon: Neil Patrick Harris.

Yes, according to Deadline Hollywood, the star of 'How I Met Your Mother' and 'Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog' has signed on to his biggest -- or smallest, depending on how you look at it -- project yet: 'Smurfs: The Movie.' The Sony film, which will be a blend of animation and live action, will feature Harris as the voice of the lead smurf.

This is just the latest offbeat venture for Harris, who famously resurrected his screen career by parodying himself in 'Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle.' The versatile television and stage star also previously appeared in such unlikely projects as the sci-fi cult hit 'Starship Troopers' and as host of the 2009 Tony and Daytime Emmy award shows.

Harris joins a cast that already features the legendary Jonathan Winters as the voice of Papa Smurf. Which Smurf Harris will play, however, remains a bit of a mystery; Deadline Hollywood simply refers to his role as that of "lead smurf." Our money is on Brainy Smurf, Papa Smurf's intellectual, and often ineffectual, right hand Smurf, which would seem to be the perfect fit for Harris's smart brand of comedy.

'Smurfs: The Movie,' which is being helmed by director Raja Gosnell ('Beverly Hills Chihuahua'), begins filming next month, with an expected release date of July 2011.
