If 'The Hurt Locker' wins best picture on Sunday, producer Nicolas Chartier will receive his award in some place other than the Kodak Theatre. According to Steve Pond at TheWrap.com, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has banned Chartier from attending the ceremony.

The decision to punish Chartier comes just days after he expressed regret for an e-mail that made the rounds in mid-February, seeking to drum up support for Best Picture contender 'Locker.' The e-mail urged its readers to support the independent 'Locker' (Chartier financed the Iraq war drama and heads Voltage Pictures) and "not a 500M film" -- a clear reference to 'Avatar's' domestic box office gross at the time the e-mail first circulated. Chartier apologized for "ignorance" and "stupidity" in a mea culpa follow-up e-mail, but he couldn't avoid paying a price. AMPAS stated in a press release today that in "disparag[ing] one of the other contending films," Chartier committed an "ethical lapse."

Pond writes that the Academy might very well have considered removing Chartier from the list of nominees, but no such action was taken. The Academy's seizing of Chartier's ticket in no way affects 'Locker's other producers, Greg Shapiro, Mark Boal (who also wrote 'Locker's screenplay) and Kathryn Bigelow (the odds-on favorite for Best Director).
