After dominating the precursor awards and earning universal praise from critics, 'The Hurt Locker's' parade of good news has come to a stand-still thanks to an e-mail sent out last week by one of its producers.

According to Gold Derby, Nicolas Chartier of Voltage Pictures was behind the e-mail, which asked Academy members to vote for the Iraq War drama over such competitors as 'Avatar.'

"If everyone tells one or two of their friends, we will win and not a $500M film," it said. "We need independent movies to win like the movies you and I do, so if you believe 'The Hurt Locker' is the best movie of 2010, help us!" Ballots are due in less than a week.

Over at the The Wrap, columnist Steve Pond said that the e-mail "stirr[ed] up an outcry from competitors." But that may just be beginning for Chartier, who appears to have violated rules set by the Academy that are designed to prevent something like this from happening. If a penalty is assessed, he could find himself watching the show from home, since the Academy has the right to withhold tickets to the show.

Chartier has since apologized for the e-mail, saying, "My naivete, ignorance of the rules and plain stupidity as a first-time nominee is not an excuse for this behavior, and I strongly regret it."

"I am emailing each person this very same statement asking to retract my previous email and requesting that you please disregard it," he added.

A response from the AMPAS has yet to be released.
