When I posted the rumor of Chris Pine being in the running for Captain America, I got an interesting response from an unnamed source that claims Pine was considered but is out of the running. According to that source, Marvel has all but locked down someone younger, not-yet-a-star, as Steve Rogers aka Captain America for Joe Johnston's Captain America: The First Avenger and the Avengers team movie. If the source is correct, Marvel has someone who isn't exactly an unknown, but a bit of a cool, unexpected choice. (A rumor over the weekend pegged Robert Buckley, but so far there's been no confirmation.)
Here are my guesses at who those contenders might be...
This was my first guess, which my source shot down, right before clamming up tighter than the lid on Bucky's child-sized coffin. The square-jawed Ackles has really come into his own on CW's Supernatural, and if they're looking for a young TV star, they could do a lot worse than placing Ackles in the red, white, and blue.
I haven't forgiven the guy for The Haunting of Molly Hartley, but he's been the next big Next Big Thing for a while now. Personally, I think his teenybopper appeal works against him in this case, and I can't see him as Cap, but if they want young and hot, well, Crawford is that.
The Dr. Who and Torchwood veteran certainly looks heroic enough, though he may be a hair too old if they're trying to pass someone off as being in their 20's. He fits my source's descriptions though, of a guy who many would think is a cool choice who also has a little bit of both television and film to his credit, but isn't a household name. Could Captain America make him a household name? Definitely.
Hunnam looks the part, is the age the studio wants, plus he's a Brit - which means they can play up the "we have an international cast" card that the studios like nowadays (especially when selling a real American hero to a worldwide audience. See also, G.I. Joe). Hunnam can currently be seen on FX's Sons of Anarchy, but I know him from Judd Apatow's short-lived sitcom Undeclared. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if Hunnam is announced as Captain America.
