We've heard of swearing like a sailor before, but this bit of casting news may take the cake.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, craggy British actor Ian McShane is in talks to join the cast of 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' as the villain of the piece, legendary real-life pirate Edward Teach, a.k.a. Blackbeard.

McShane, of course, is best known to American audiences as 'Deadwood's' famously foulmouthed brothel owner Al Swearengen, though most recently his invective has been directed less at fictional prostitutes and more at the vagaries of the industry. Like 'Deadwood,' his latest effort, NBC's high-concept alternate world drama 'Kings,' was critically acclaimed but failed to find a steady audience, leading to its premature cancellation. Like 'Deadwood,' his latest effort, NBC's high-concept alternate world drama 'Kings,' was critically acclaimed but failed to find a steady audience, leading to its premature cancellation.

This wouldn't be the first time that McShane has found solace playing a big-screen pirate, however, having previously provided the voice for Captain Hook in 'Shrek the Third.' But while he has had a measure of success in the field of animation -- his voice has also appeared in films such as 'Kung Fu Panda' and 'Coraline' -- there's no doubt that 'Pirates of the Caribbean' would be his highest-profile gig to date.

The fourth installment of the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise, which has earned over $2.7 billion worldwide, is rumored to involve a race to find the Fountain of Youth. While stars Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are not involved in the project, Johnny Depp is on board to reprise his acclaimed role as the insouciant pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, while Penelope Cruz is also rumored to be joining the cast as a potential love interest and rival for Sparrow.

Filming for 'On Stranger Tides' is expected to begin this summer.
