Yesterday, Pajiba reported that Tom Hanks' production company, Playtone, has picked up the rights to and is developing a remake Olivier Assayas' Summer Hours, a French film that made many critics' best of 2009 lists. In today's pitch, I'd like to dissuade Hanks and his co-producer on the project, Gary Goetzman (Where the Wild Things Are). But how is that a pitch, you wonder? Well, I have a different idea for them:

Make a MoMA-sponsored movie!

Assayas' film was the second in an ongoing -- and seemingly Juliette Binoche-contracted -- effort by Paris' Musee d'Orsay to produce a series of works by renowned auteurs. The connecting rule (aside from Binoche's casting?) is that each film must feature a scene in the museum. The first sponsored movie, Hou Hsiao-Hsien's Flight of the Red Balloon, features a school field trip to the Musee d'Orsay, while Summer Hours contains both a scene in the museum and a plot involving the institution's interest in a deceased artist's works.

So if someone, Hanks or otherwise, is going to be inspired by Summer Hours, the logical move would be to partner with New York's Museum of Modern Art, or some other interested museum, for original stories that are more specific to America and that American institution, to be directed by American auteurs. The best part is that I'm sure Binoche would be down to appear in all the installments in this series, too, since she does about 20 movies anyway, seems not to be too picky and she's fine acting in English.

So where's the actual plot pitch? Well, the point is for some auteur to come up with the actual idea for each film. You can't have all the work done for you, though I guess that is the intention with picking up rights for a remake in the first place.
