Doug LimanThe 1971 riot at Attica state prison in New York wasn't just a matter of history for director Doug Liman: it was personal.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Liman ('The Bourne Identity') just signed on to direct 'Attica,' a film that tells the story of the legendary, tragic uprising.

But the project has family ties for the director, who is son to Arthur Liman, former special commission chief counsel to the New York State Special Commission on Attica Prison, who later published a memoir admonishing prison administrators and state officials for their role in the incident, which claimed the lives of 32 inmates and 10 hostages. "My father's job was not to prosecute; it was to find out the truth about what had actually transpired. He was fact finding, not prosecution," Liman wrote in a recent blog post. "But this white lawyer from New York City was going to have an uphill battle explaining the difference to the inmates."

The film -- based partly on Liman's father's accounts -- will be written by 'Precious' screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher, and is yet another politically-charged project for the one-time director of zeitgeist films like 'Swingers' and 'Go.'

Liman's next fllm, out later this year, is 'Fair Game', an adaptation of the Valerie Plame's espionage memoir starring Sean Penn as Joe Wilson and Naomi Watts as the embattled Plame.
