MadonnaMadonna is planning a return to the big screen -- only this time, she'll be in the directors chair.

According to Variety, the singer/actress will direct the upcoming biopic 'W.E.,' based on the scandalous affair between King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson. Currently eyeing the role of Simpson is Vera Farmiga, who just picked up a Best Supporting Actress nomination for 'Up in the Air.'

Madonna -- who previously directed the 2008 film 'Filth and Wisdom' -- will also co-write the pic with Alex Keshishian of 'Truth or Dare' fame. MadonnaMadonna is planning a return to the big screen -- only this time, she'll be in the directors chair.

The news is especially interesting, considering that Madonna's film career hasn't exactly been, well, stellar; her last major live-action role came in 2002's 'Swept Away,' which was universally panned by critics and later swept the Razzie Awards, winning Best Picture, Director (then-husband Guy Ritchie) and Best Actress, among others (check out our list of the most Razzie-nominated stars ever here).
