CATEGORIES Action, Comedy, Horror, Romance, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Box Office Predictions, UK Box Office, Cinematical, UK Box OfficeWell, it had to happen eventually. Avatar was booted out of first place by Dear John, but still managed to do pretty well for a movie in its eighth week of release. Here's the top five:
1. Dear John: $32.4 million
2. Avatar: $23.6 million
3. From Paris with Love: $8.1 million
4. Edge of Darkness: $7 million
5. Tooth Fairy: $6.5 million
We've got three new ones for the Valentine's Day weekend:
Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief
What's It All About: Percy Jackson is a modern day teen who also happens to be the son of the Greek god Poseidon. Percy is the prime suspect when the lightning bolt of Zeus is stolen and he must clear his name.
Why It Might Do Well: Director Chris Columbus helmed two of the Harry Potter movies, and Percy Jackson seems to be cut from the same cloth.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Columbus directed the two least noteworthy Potter films
Number of Theaters: 3,300
Prediction: $22 million
What's It All About: A group of Los Angeles residents navigate love's rocky path in this romantic comedy.
Why It Might Do Well: A romance unseated Avatar so there's obviously an audience for it, and the all-star cast probably has at least one performer who tickles your fancy.
Why It Might Not Do Well: A lot of us guys would prefer to see stuff explode.
Number of Theaters: 3,600
Prediction: $32 million
What's It All About: Remake of the classic Universal monster flick in which a man is cursed to turn into a wolf-like creature under the full moon.
Why It Might Do Well: Lots of men folk display wolf-like tendencies on Valentine's day.
Why It Might Not Do Well: The moon won't be full until the 28th of this month.
Number of Theaters: 3,100
Prediction: $29 million
