Scene from GhostLet's face facts here people - kissing in movies is very important. It establishes the relationship our hero or heroine has with their prospective partner - and it gives us, the audience, a nice warm feeling inside.

When it's done wrong though, a movie kiss can be as painful to watch as walking in on your parents while they're making love. And with that thought now lodged in your brains (sorry about that), and with Valentine's Day just round the corner, we take a look now at the movie snogs that just didn't work on so many levels.

Pucker up and enjoy!

1. Jim Carrey/Lauren Holly in Dumb and Dumber

We know this is a gag, but it doesn't make it any less painful to watch. Jim Carrey gives a powerful lesson in, not how to kiss, but how to consume your partner's head. We're just surprised no one got injured during this scene.

2. Patrick Swayze/Demi Moore in Ghost
For some unknown reason, this movie kiss comes up high in many 'best ever' lists. What?! For starters, he's glowing. GLOWING?! Then just observe Demi Moore's lips throughout the snog - they're as lifeless as one of the pots that these two made while he was alive. Nope, this is a bad, bad kiss.

3. Viggo Mortensen/Liv Tyler in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

We admit, the sound effects added to this clip make it worse than it really is. But besides that, just observe the ferocity that newly crowned Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) attacks his lover Arwen (Liv Tyler) in this embrace - we wouldn't be surprised if he ended up with her teeth after that snog.

4. Mark Hamil & Carrie Fisher in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Luke Skywalker is kissing his sister here. Nuff said. This is more wrong than the most wrongest thing you can possibly think of. No wonder Chewie looks so confused.

5. Woody Allen/Julia Roberts in Everyone Says I Love You

Woody Allen has cleverly been able to write into a few of his movies a scene where he gets to the kiss the leading lady. But in this set up with Julia Roberts, you can almost see the moment when the actress is close to bringing up that day's lunch after her lip clash with the 61-year-old director.
