Also on 'Avatar''s radar is 'Titanic''s box-office record in North America, where it grossed nearly $601 million between the years 1997-98. 'Avatar' is currently at $553 million and counting, and will likely surpass 'Titanic' in just a handful of weeks.

To be sure, if 'Titanic' and 'Avatar' were the only two films Cameron ever made, his place in history -- and financial security -- would be assured. But the director is in a class with few others -- perhaps only Steven Spielberg -- in terms of the knack for generating monumental box office success.

Going back to Cameron's 'Terminator' series, for example, BoxOfficeMojo reports that while the first installment of the franchise in 1984 had a "lifetime" gross of just $38.3 million, its sequel, 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day,' proved a huge hit, with $204.8 million. Cameron's 1994 action flick 'True Lies' was also a success, taking in $146.2 million in 1994.
