Paramount has ordered up some more 'Paranormal Activity' this October. But will it be another 'Book of Shadows?

The studio is set to launch the sequel to the low-budget mega hit on October 22, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film's producers, Jason Blum and Oren Peli, are keeping plot details airtight -- we don't even get a title yet -- but they've asked screenwriter Michael R. Perry to pen the follow-up and 'Saw VI''s Kevin Greutert to direct. Paramount has ordered up some more 'Paranormal Activity' this October. But will it be another 'Book of Shadows?

At last count the original 'Paranormal Activity', which cost $15,000 to make, had raked in $151 million worldwide, prompting Paramount Film Group President Adam Goodman to launch a campaign to fund between 10-20 similar films for less than $1 million each year.

But perhaps the best barometer 'Activity''s success as a franchise is 1999's 'The Blair Witch Procject', whose original film had a lot in common with 'Activity' (no-name cast, shoestring budget, gritty look, massive over-performance at the box office), yet its sequel saw a $214 million drop-off in earnings when 'Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2' only pulled in $26 million.

So will 'Activity' suffer the same fate? The producers don't seem to think so.

"These guys get it," the producers told THR about their screenwriter-director combo, "and the fans won't be disappointed."
