Voldemort's Childhood
Born as Tom Marvolo Riddle, Voldemort's parents were witch Merope Gaunt and muggle Tom Riddle. Merope seduced Tom senior using magical means. After the bewitchment ended, he left his pregnant wife. Merope wound up in a London orphanage, where Tom junior was born. After picking his name, she died. Growing up in the orphanage, Tom always felt that he was different. He bullied the other children with a power that he didn't understand. When Tom turned 11, Albus Dumbledore offered him a place at Hogwarts. He was suspicious of young Tom from the beginning.

Voldemort at Hogwarts
Tom was a brilliant student. He was well-liked by all his teachers, except for Dumbledore, for reasons mentioned above. After learning that he was a relative of Salazar Slytherin, Tom found and opened the Chamber of Secrets; the monster inside of it killed another student. During one summer break, he killed his father and grandparents, and later framed his maternal uncle for the murders. He learned about Horcruxes as a way to split the soul and keep from dying. While at Hogwarts, he began to call himself Lord Voldemort. He also had a group of followers that would later become the first Death Eaters.

Voldemort After Hogwarts
Obsessed with power and immorality, Voldemort searched for relics of the four Hogwarts' founders to make Horcruxes. Voldemort disappeared for a number of years. During that time, he made Horcruxes and pushed the boundaries of magic. When he resurfaced, he asked Dumbledore for the Defense against the Dark Arts position. He was unsuccessful and cursed the job.

Voldemort as the Dark Lord
During the first Wizarding War, Voldemort inspired terror and destroyed families. He amassed numerous Horcruxes. Still, he was afraid of death and losing power. One of his Death Eaters, Severus Snape, overheard part of a prophecy foretelling the birth of a boy who would defeat him. Even though the prophecy could have referred to two wizarding babies, Voldemort choose to go after the Half-Blood. On Oct. 31, 1981, Voldemort found and killed Harry Potter's parents. The Killing Curse rebounded back to Voldemort, separating his damaged soul from his body.

Voldemort Reborn
For the next decade, Voldemort was without a body and thus rendered helpless. In 'The Sorcerer's Stone,' Voldemort inhabited the body of Professor Quirrell. His plan to get the Sorcerer's Stone was stopped by Harry. Afterward, Voldemort went back into hiding until Peter Pettigrew found him. In 'The Goblet of Fire,' Voldemort was reborn. He became obsessed with knowing the full prophecy. His plan of using Harry to get the prophecy didn't work and the sphere containing it was shattered; he also had Albus Dumbledore killed. Voldemort did not know Dumbledore was already dying and arranged his death with Severus Snape.

Voldemort's Final Fall
In 'The Deathly Hallows,' Voldemort rose to power like never before. He had Hogwarts', the Ministry, and the Wizarding World in his grip. His final task was to kill Harry Potter. Voldemort knew that his wand would not work properly against Harry's, so tracks the powerful Elder Wand -- a wand said to be made by Death. At the same time, Harry, Ron and Hermione were busy finding and destroying Voldemort's Horcruxes. At the Battle of Hogwarts', Voldemort realized the Elder Wand would not work for him, so he killed Snape thinking the wand would respond to him at long last. He used the Killing Curse on Harry, and Harry willingly sacrificed himself so he that he didn't die. Voldemort realized that Harry was still alive and they dueled. With all the Horcruxes destroyed, Voldemort finally became mortal. However, Voldemort did not know that Harry was the master of the Elder Wand, and his Killing Curses backfires on him and he died.
