Children of the '80s, rest easy. It appears that 'Ghostbusters 3' is, at last, happening.

Not to be outdone by his son Jason's award season buzz, Ivan Reitman announced this week that he'll direct the long-awaited, long-rumored third installment in the 'Ghostbusters' franchise, and that he "hopes to start shooting it this next year."

At the National Board of Review Awards, Reitman -- who directed the first two films -- confirmed to MTV that yes, a script is in, and yes, he's behind the camera for it.

After years of rumors that seemed to go nowhere (Eliza Dushku and Allysa Milano as the "new guard" of 'busters, Ben Stiller as its star, the Apatow crew as understudies), Sigourney Weaver recently sparked new interest in the film last month when she speculated about plot details during an interview with the UK's Channel 4.

"I'm afraid to say it ['Ghostbusters 3'] is happening," she said, then let slip some interesting, spoiler tidbits (that have since been debunked). But it nonetheless put a new spotlight on the project that helped move it forward, regardless of whether Weaver's intelligence is accurate or not.

"I'm not going to comment on what's in the script and on what Sigourney may or may not have said," Reitman told MTV. "She's been so busy on 'Avatar,' I've not been able to find her. There's some very cool things in the new draft [of the script], let's just put it that way."
