According to the Hollywood Reporter, Townsend -- who starred in 'Queen of the Damned' and 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' but perhaps is best known as Charlize Theron's boyfriend -- has departed Marvel's 'Thor' due to "creative differences."

The 37-year-old Irish actor had been cast as Fandral, one of Thor's allies, in the Kenneth Branagh-helmed comic-book adaptation, which stars Chris Hemsworth as the eponymous hammer-wielding Norse god cast down from the heavens to live on Earth. The film is scheduled to begin shooting today.

The 'Thor' incident recalls Townsend's rescinded role in 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy. Townsend was originally cast in what could have been the career-changing role of Aragon, but Peter Jackson replaced him with Viggo Mortenson the day before filming began. It wouldn't be the last time Jackson pulled a last minute switcharoo. Days before shooting was scheduled to commence on 'The Lovely Bones,' he replaced Ryan Gosling with Mark Wahlberg.

Beyond "creative differences" -- that classic Hollywood catch-all phrase -- the circumstances that predicated Townsend's 'Thor' departure are unknown. He has been replaced by Joshua Dallas, an American actor and relative newcomer who will appear in George Lucas' forthcoming 'Red Tails.'

'Thor' co-stars Anthony Hopkins, Renee Russo and Natalie Portman, and is scheduled for release on May 6, 2011.
