Mariah Carey has found a new and unique explanation for her latest headline-grabbing antics: the intoxicating presence of Lee Daniels.

You may recall that on Tuesday, the pop diva appeared at the Palm Springs International Film Festival to receive the Breakthrough Actress award for her work on 'Precious' and delivered what appeared to be a drunken acceptance speech that had tongues wagging and the internet all abuzz. You may recall that on Tuesday, the pop diva appeared at the Palm Springs International Film Festival to receive the Breakthrough Actress award for her work on 'Precious' and delivered what appeared to be a drunken acceptance speech that had tongues wagging and the internet all abuzz. Now The Hollywood Reporter has learned the truth behind the viral video -- and 'Precious' director Lee Daniels is to blame.

"The thing is me and Lee hadn't see each other in a long time, and then he was presenting my award, so he starts off immediately with inside jokes," Carey told reporters backstage at the People's Choice Awards. "We had splashes of champagne, and I love Lee, but he's a bad influence."

Drunken award show speeches are, of course, a Hollywood tradition, but this one gained a little more play than usual thanks to Carey's history of unusual behavior, her best known episode being a particularly dopey appearance on MTV's 'TRL' back in 2001. Since then, the singer has been the frequent butt of media jokes, something that Carey has learned to take with a sense of humor.

"If people don't understand me and think I'm just like this girl that stands by a microphone and sings 'Hero,' then they're definitely not going to get me," she said in the interview. "But if people knew me better, they would understand I have a sense of humor, and basically that's what gets me through life."
