Steven Soderbergh ('The Informant!') has assembled a cast of heavyweights that befits the title of his next project.

According to Variety, Soderbergh's thriller 'Knockout' will pit Michael Douglas, Ewan McGregor, Dennis Quaid and 'Inglourious Basterds' star Michael Fassbender against mixed martial arts champion Gina Carano as Mallory Kane, a black-ops soldier who seeks revenge after she's double-crossed on a mission gone awry.

Douglas will play a high-level government figure, with the rest of the male cast as members of Kane's special ops team. The Playlist says this project is in the vein of films like La Femme Nikita, the 'Bourne' trilogy and legendary badass Lee Marvin's 'Point Blank,' and could be the most action-packed film Soderbergh has taken on since 1999's 'The Limey' ... if its neophyte star can deliver the goods.

Carano -- whose acting is limited to playing "Crush" on NBC's failed 'American Gladiators' reboot in 2008 -- will be tackling her first big-screen role here, but that hurdle hasn't stopped Soderbergh in the past.

His last film, 2009's 'The Girlfriend Experience,' featured adult film star Sasha Grey as a conflicted high-class call girl. Although her performance received mixed reviews, Soderbergh showed that he's willing to experiment with on-screen authenticity. Only this time he's surrounding his newbie with some of the best talent Hollywood has to offer -- so let's hope Carano can elevate her acting chops to match her ass-kicking prowess.
