Life is full of many great mysteries, but the one I've been most consumed by recently is this: why on Earth would anyone make a sequel to Alone in The Dark? The first film stands as not only one of the worst movies of the past few years (Christian Slater and Tara Reid...really? Is that casting agent still working?) but another fine example of why creating movies from videogames is generally a bad idea. Throw in the fact that it was directed by everyone's favorite hack director, one Mr. Uwe Boll, and the mystery only deepens...

There are a few potential silver linings in the black cinematic cloud that is Alone in the Dark 2. Slater, Reid, and Boll are not returning (although hearing Rick Yune is taking over the role of series lead Edward Carnby isn't filling me with confidence). Don't get too excited, Boll collaborators Michael Roesch and Peter Scheerer are handling the directorial duties (which should terrify anyone who sat through Brotherhood of Blood). Okay, so maybe those linings aren't silver after all.

I'd say we could all be happy that Lance Henriksen, Danny Trejo, and Bill Moseley were onboard in supporting roles, but I'm even pessimistic about that. Brotherhood of Blood featured genre faves Sid Haig and Ken Foree in the supporting cast, and while they were the best part of the film, the movie still sucked. I'm going to try to be a "glass is half full" kind of guy with this one based on the trailer (which benefits from Henriksen's presence), but I'm not holding my breath.

Alone in the Dark 2 hits DVD on January 26th.

Jump ahead for the trailer (thanks to the gang at Dread Central for bringing it to our attention).
