Leading the pack with 17 mentions is Lone Sherfig's 'An Education,' which made the cut for best film, best director and seven actor slots (including breakout star Carey Mulligan), with Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds' following closely behind with 14 spots. BAFTA Nominations: 'An Education' Leads FieldThe British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced today its long lists for its British Academy Film Awards, more popularly known as the BAFTAs. Of the 220 movies eligible for contention this year, the long lists narrow down the potential nominees to 15 in each of the major categories.

Leading the pack with 17 mentions is Lone Sherfig's 'An Education,' which made the cut for best film, best director and seven actor slots (including breakout star Carey Mulligan), with Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds' following closely behind with 14 spots.

Continuing their awards tear are Kathryn Bigelow's 'The Hurt Locker' with 12 mentions, James Cameron's juggernaut 'Avatar' with 11, and 'Up in the Air' with 9, including commendations for actors George Clooney, Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick. 'Precious' also made a strong showing, earning mentions for best picture, director and accolades for stars Gabourey Sibide, Mo'Nique and Mariah Carey.

Notably absent from the best film and best actor list was Rob Marshall's 'Nine' and the movie's leading man Daniel Day-Lewis, respectively, though co-stars Marion Cotillard and Penelope Cruz were noted for their performances. Also omitted from the best film list: Peter Jackson's 'The Lovely Bones,' (though the Jackson-produced 'District 9' made the cut), despite actor mentions for stars Saoirse Ronin, Susan Sarandon, Rachel Weisz and Stanley Tucci.

Tucci was listed twice this year, both for his 'Bones' performance as well as his role in 'Julie & Julia.' His co-star Meryl Streep also earned two mentions, for 'Julia' and 'It's Complicated.' Clint Eastwood was a triple threat, earning two mentions for his direction of 'Gran Torino' and 'Invictus,' as well as an acting nod for his starring role in 'Torino.'

In addition to the long lists, the five Film Not In the English Language category nominees were also released today. They include Pedro Almodóvar's 'Broken Embraces' and 'Coco Before Chanel,' starring Audrey Tautou. Rounding out the list are 'Let the Right One In,' 'A Prophet' and 'The White Ribbon.'

The BAFTAs honor the best films of any nationality released theatrically on British cinema screens during the past year. The 6000-plus members of the Academy vote to whittle down the long lists to just five nominees in each category on Jan. 21. The awards ceremony takes place on Sun., Feb. 21.
