Producers Guild of America Nominations: 'Avatar,' 'Star Trek' to Compete for Best PicEchoing the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and, it seems, every film critics' group worldwide, the Producers Guild of America unveiled nominees for its 21st annual awards with a list that includes many usual suspects -- like 'Up in the Air,' 'The Hurt Locker' and 'Inglourious Basterds.'

The list, however, is noteworthy in two respects. Firstly, the PGA Best Picture field has been expanded from five to 10 nominees, following the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' decision to do the same when nods are announced on Feb. 2. Secondly, the best picture list includes 'Avatar,' 'District 9' and 'Star Trek', a trio of sci-fi epics hailing from a genre not typically recognized come awards season. Per Variety, the other films on the list are 'An Education,' 'Invictus,' 'Precious' and 'Up.' The award is given to the film's producer(s). The PGA itself is a prominent trade organization that advocates on behalf of, and provides services to, producers of film, television and new media in the U.S. Like the Golden Globes, its honors are considered a precursor to the Oscars, especially regarding the all-important best picture prize: In the 20 previous years of the PGAs, 13 winners went on to win in that same category at the Oscars.

The Hollywood Palladium will host the PGA Awards ceremony on Sun., Jan. 24; more than 4,200 members are eligible to vote.

Despite the growth of the list of films nominated by the PGA for best picture, it is equally significant, Variety noted, how many films were not on the list, such as 'Nine' 'The Blind Side' and 'A Serious Man.'
