Here's a speedy demise to a rumor that popped up last week: Sam Worthington is not going to take on the role of 'Flash Gordon' in the 2012 film about the evergreen comic-strip hero.

Just before the end of the year, rumors picked up that the 'Avatar' and 'Terminator Salvation' star was in competition with Ryan Reynolds for the role popularized by Buster Crabbe in the late 1930s and early '40s in a series of movie serials (and later forever immortalized by Sam J. Jones in a very campy 1980 version -- which had a theme song by Queen). Not so, according to Ain't It Cool News. In an e-mail to the site, Worthington wrote: "There is no validity to the rumours. Sometimes, as you know, studios tend to just scat ideas and they leak out -- but its the first i have heard about it mate."

Worthington, who is branching out in his career by starring in 'The Debt,' a thriller about Nazi hunters, and opposite Keira Knightley in the romantic drama 'Last Night,' both due this year, might be more interested in meatier roles now that he's mastered the fantasy/sci-fi genre. There are rumors, however, that he's up for the fourth Mad Max movie as well as Captain America, and he's playing Perseus in the 2010 remake of 'Clash of the Titans.' But we think he wants to move on. (As for Reynolds, we can't imagine him taking on Flash Gordon after suiting up as 'The Green Lantern')

Still, Worthington's muscle-bound body and boy-next-door good looks would have made him a perfect candidate to play Flash Gordon, traveling the universe to beat those evil-natured robots -- eh, villains. What do you think?

Would Sam Worthington make a good 'Flash Gordon'?
