James McAvoy as the next 007? Close ... but not quite.

According to Pajiba, McAvoy is attached to play the lead in 'Ian Fleming,' a biopic about the years that inspired Fleming to create that beloved martini-sipping member of Her Majesty's Secret Service: James Bond.

The film is loosely based on Andrew Lycett's 1996 book 'Ian Fleming: The Man Behind James Bond,' which profiles Fleming's early years as a London playboy, adrift in the shadow of his politician father and successful siblings until his life-changing World War II experiences triggered him -- with the 1953 novel 'Casino Royale' -- to channel those experiences into one of the century's most enduring and memorable characters. McAvoy (nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in the period drama 'Antonement') might seem an unconventional choice to play the man responsible for testosterone-driven titles like 'Thunderball' and 'Octopussy.' But since his breakthrough role in 2006's 'The Last King of Scotland,' McAvoy has proven himself a versatile actor, able to take on the troubled, charismatic lead ('Atonement') yet still kick a little ass when necessary ('Wanted').

He might not be able pull off the the kind of intensity that we're used to from Daniel Craig as the current vengeance-driven, Jason Bourne-esque Bond, but McAvoy's more than capable of showing us where that intensity originated with a subtlety and depth we haven't seen from Fleming's debonair spy.

All that stands in McAvoy's way at this point is his own packed schedule, which includes the upcoming 'Wanted 2,' and 'I'm With Cancer,' co-starring Seth Rogen.
